About

My life’s been inspired by Edward R. Murrow’s search for meaning in television news:

“This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise its merely wires and lights in a box.” -Edward R Murrow, 1958

Murrow’s “wires in a box” words sum life up for me, not just TV news. Good intent and meaning must be brought to our work and place in this world to connect the lights and wires into a quality signal. But then a decade plus of my life has been everything TV news – working as a television news producer and writer across our country in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Salt Lake City and Chicago with a stop off early there as an intern at the CBS Evening News in NYC back in Dan Rather’s days. I’ve also written stories, articles, plays, and other creative works published in print, online and social media across the globe.

“Wires In A Box” is dedicating to all things for a writing and reading life. It’s about ethics, style, motivation, techniques, art, inspiration, words, pictures – still and moving, lessons from the past to inform the future, scifi, education, television, film, books, and everything else related to bettering oneself as a meaningful member of society, an individual, a journalist, a creator, and a writer.
